Your relationship with social media

When you are waiting for your friend do you often find yourself whipping out your phone to access your texts or escape into Facebook?

From hanging around with friends, I have also found that people prefer to use their phones rather than talk to those people around them. So why do some people have a better relationship with social media than those around them in the real life?

Well, if you look at attachment theory you can see that people who have a secure attachment will use social media to keep up-dated but will save those personal conversations for face-to-face contact.

Whereas those who have insecure attachments tend to rely on social media to create reassurance and manage the fear of social interactions. This can result in less meaningful relationships with family and friends and an increase in social media dependence.

The problem with being attached to your phone is that when it comes to finding your soul mate, you may have lost some of those social skills you need to be able to hold a conversation and being able to go see them face-to-face rather than just talking to them on social media. This also helps explain why catfishing occurs but I will save that until another post!

So now that you know a little bit more about social media, will you try and make more of an effort to stay off your phone? Let me know in the comments bellow and I will speak to you soon!

  1. Great post! It’s so much harder to have meaningful/difficult conversations in person because you’re faced w all the bodily reactions – anxiety/trembling/shifty-eyes/etc. – and have to show that to someone else, where when you have convo via social media/text message/ you feel safer. It definitely complicates things when you’re tempted to take the easy way out, but you’re on to something. I definitely try to keep my phone away when I’m hanging out with people because I feel I’m missing out on making great memories w them by typing away on my phone.

    • Yes I know what you mean, I always try to stay off my phone when I’m with my friends but some people don’t do that which can come across as rude instead of them being nervous.
